Move Orders to Another Line for Capacity Management

Capacity management may require moving orders between lines. A cycle may be overloaded, the orders won’t fit within the available capacity of the cycle, or a line may be underutilized to the extent that all of its orders for the underutilized period should be moved to another line.

This article describes how to quickly evaluate capacity, move orders between lines, and sequence them appropriately in their new location.

See Move Orders to Another Line for the instructions about moving an order.

Instructions:

  1. The first step is to schedule all of the lines to be involved in the capacity evaluation and movement of orders.

  2. Evaluate capacity using the Phenix dashboard in the upper right of the screen. Mouse over the box showing line utilization to pop up the details by cycle.

  3. This example assumes that we want to shutdown one line for a week, and move all of its orders to another line. The dashboard in Phenix shows that the two lines in question are 37% and 36% utilized during the week of July 27th; therefore, consolidating the orders to one line should be capacity feasible:

  4. Select the orders to be moved. In this case, we’ve selected all orders for the cycle in the week of July 27th on line CB2:

  5. Select Move to Another Line:

  6. Select the line to move them to:

  7. Select how the orders should be moved.

    1. You can choose to move the orders to the end of the cycle that matches the due dates of the orders to be moved, or to move them to unscheduled status.

    2. Moving orders to the end of the cycle is the best choice if some of the products to be moved are not in the Product Wheel for their new line, and you want to keep them in the sequence.

    3. Moving to unscheduled may be the best choice if all of the products to be moved are present in the Product Wheel of their new line, or if you are not sure that all of the orders will fit in the time available on the new line.

    4. Click on Confirm to move the orders.

  8. If you use line modes: Please review the line mode of the moved orders. Note that cumulative consumption will reset when line modes change.

  9. Once the orders are on their new line, there are a number of options for adjusting the sequence to best fit on the new line:

    1. A subset of the orders can be selected and moved using drag and drop, see drag and drop scheduling for more detail:

    2. A set of orders can be selected on the Gantt chart and dragged to a new position:

    3. Some or all of the orders can be rescheduled by selecting them and choosing Reschedule.

  10. Another option instead of manually scheduling orders on their new line, or including the codes in the normal Wheel for the new line, is to have alternate Wheels that can be loaded as needed. The import interface for Product Wheels runs quickly, see https://phenixps.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/PSD/pages/32210968 for more information.

    1. Create an alternate Product Wheel or Wheels and save them in Excel with easily understood names.

    2. Load the alternate Wheel, see https://phenixps.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/PSD/pages/32210968 .

    3. Select the portion of the schedule to be sequenced using the alternate Wheel.

    4. Reschedule the selected orders.

    5. Reload the standard Wheel, or remember to reload it before you schedule again.
